Krashlander UI

Over the past couple weeks, I’ve been working on the Krashlander UI.  My goal, as always, is to keep things simple.  I really liked the way the new Windows Phone 7 pivot control looked and felt, so I decided to use it as my primary UI.

I’m very much down to brass-tacks on Krashlander.  The only outstanding items I have are:

  • Create the remaining 8 levels and tune them for performance and feel.
  • Add trial logic to entice players to purchase the game.
  • Create all the ancillary media for the marketplace and Windows Phone 7 menus.
  • Finish any other odds and ends that crop up while doing the 3 tasks above.

I won’t be able to tune the levels for feel until I get my hands on  another device.  Hopefully I can get hold of one prior to launch.  If somebody has one that they could part with for a week PLEASE let me know.

I’m really looking forward to getting Krashlander into some hands other than mine.  I think it’s a unique game and I’m anxious to find out what others think.

Have you thought about publishing a web version with a few levels of the game? Just so folks can try it out without a device?

Hey Andy,

Yeah, I've been thinking about that. I have a lot of "Diver" fans that want a non-mobile version of Krashlander.

I'm considering porting the game in it's entirety over to Browser/Out Of Browser and using it as a Marketing vehicle for the wp7 version. Could create more buzz that way.

I've also considered selling the non-mobile version for 99 cents as well, but not sure about that yet. Would be nice if there was marketplace for non-mobile apps. One that was as easy to work with as the wp7 version. I heard rumor one is coming with Windows 8, but that's a ways away.

This is looking awesomely good!
Would love to see some time in the future a kind of post-mortem on the developing process of this game, an informal rough one if you will.
I'm particularly interested in the selection of Silverlight over XNA (and Farseer for Silverlight I suppose), I have only used XNA and this kind of UI and game programming would have taken quite a lot of work that perhaps with your selected tools was greatly alleviated.

I've always wanted to do a post-mortem on my games, but I usually start working on the next game instead. I'll try to do one on Krashlander (a rough one like you say) sometime after it's released.

In the mean time, quick answer to why Silverlight and not XNA. Pretty simple actually I already had large code base from my Diver and Diver2 games which was very similar to what I needed for Krashlander. It was just the quickest route for getting the game finished in time for the WP7 launch.

That said, I really like the vector gfx Silverlight has and being able to utilize Expression Blend as a down and dirty level editor did save loads of time. Performance probably isn't quite what XNA could do, but I'm hoping it's good enough.

I do want to make an XNA game sometime, it'll all depend on the game, though.
